Honestly, the one-unit codex isn’t even the worst part. What really ticks me off is meticulously painting dozens of little plastic army men to face off against someone who plunks down a couple big robots that barely move out of the deployment zone.
Shit like this is what’s making 40k into such a stupid game. Where is the fun in rolling dice at a few big bloody robots for a couple hours? You’re not out-maneuvering that. There’s no interesting tactical decisions there. It’s just focus fire against one until it’s dead, then rinse-and-repeat until they’re all gone or you have nothing left. It’s Warhammer-themed Yahtzee, with the figures just there for show.
If you’re looking to get drunk with your buddies and throw dice in a pseudo-RPG with plastic army men then sure…I guess it’s cool. But if you’re looking for an engaging, competitive wargame then shit like this is why WH40K just doesn’t cut it in that department anymore.
